“Familier i Norden” is an award-winning Danish fiction TV series consisting of four episodes.
Sami returns to Aarhus after years abroad, but when his brother Idriss is pulled into danger, Sami must face the crime he thought he'd left behind. Meanwhile, their mother Shanaz struggles to keep the family together without easy choices.
The series won “Best Fiction – Short” at the TVPRISEN Awards and was also nominated for “Short TV Series of the Year” at the Robert Awards.
The series is now streaming on TV 2 Play. Produced by Forty Five Films for TV 2 Østjylland and directed by my close collaborator, Milan Ganesan.

"Familier i Norden" is a hard-hitting, naturalistic story set in the underworld of Aarhus.
The series has a sharp focus on rawness and authenticity, but most importantly, on the deeper emotions hidden beneath the surface.
With a stylistically realistic undertone, it explores everything from the anxiety that lingers in the wake of scars on the soul, to the smiles and happy moments that give us something worth fighting for.This is expressed through a visual language, that strikes a balance where both the hard and the soft elements are given room to shine - while maintaining a sense of intimacy and authenticity.
It is not a Dogme film - though it may sound like it’s pushed in that direction. We are allowed to turn the stylistic dials. It doesn't have to be real; it just has to feel real. We draw on elements of cinéma vérité, where the camera acts as a fly on the wall, observing the story unfold on equal terms with the audience. The visual language should feel invisible and natural in its execution.
In "Familier i Norden", life is lived in golden hour. The hours when everything feels innocent and the Danish summer reveals itself at its most beautiful.
We are shooting in May, when the trees have blossomed and the ghetto is in full bloom. At this time of year, the ghetto doesn't look like a godforsaken place - and it shouldn't. We want to create a warm and colourful universe. We don't want to look down on the ghetto - we want to give the people who live there something they can see themselves reflected in.
That being said, there is still a strong use of cinematic devices to create tension and a sense of rawness. This is not a lullaby we're making. It is a balancing act that, when executed correctly, creates a rich and compelling story - one that grabs the audience, strikes a nerve, and leaves room for reflection.
